Let’s dive in.

1 “Wierd” Trick To Improve Max Speed

If you look at most of the top guys in track, they are masters of staying relaxed and you’ve probably heard this before but what does it even?

Imagine swinging your arms for a punch. If your arm is “loose” and relaxed it will swing powerfully and fast. If your arm is “tense" and your biceps are flexed, it will swing slow and weak.

The same thing applies to sprinting when you tense up the muscles in the hands, neck, and shoulders. Your arm swing slows down which in turn slows down your stride. The solution is going to sound stupid but it works instantly.

Go get a bag of potato chips, preferably Lays since they’re more fragile and break easier. For real, I'm not joking.

Then go perform a sprint session and run with a potato chip in each hand. This will force you to relax because you will feel your hand crushing and breaking the potato chip if you don’t. Do some tempo runs like this and see how you relax instantly.

Does Caffeine Make You Faster?

Look, I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of coffee. I hate depending on outside factors to perform and think it’s ridiculous to depend on a liquid to start the day.

I'll probably lose a couple of subs who are coffee fanatics (my mom included) but it's the truth. I’m not entirely against it though, especially in the form of green or black tea.

Anyways, the science shows that caffeine indeed does help you run faster. That’s not surprising BUT the amount that’s needed to produce an effect is surprisingly low.

Just 3mg according to this study. I don’t want to promote a caffeine addiction but if micro-dosing 3mg of caffeine helps you get more out of your training I’m with that.

1 SIMPLE-TO-FIX Mistake That Kills Speed

If you want to find something that’s hurting your speed, an easy place to look is your arm swing. When you sprint are your arms crossing the mid-line of your body?

This slows you down because your energy is being “wasted” trying to counterbalance this excessive rotation of the torso.

Also, it creates more air resistance since your body is opening up wider. This is why Olympic swimmers try to get as narrow as possible during the freestyle stroke.

I’ve shown this exercise before but a simple way to fix this is to perform arm swings on a bench. It’ll feel robotic but it will teach you how to swing the arms and minimize rotation without worrying about the legs.
